THE JOINR ARENA STORY ISSUE 01

We grew up on the floor,
two feet from the TV.

Shag carpet, a wood-grain console, a cartridge you blew into, and a friend on the other controller. JOINR ARENA is that feeling, rebuilt for the phone in your pocket: arcade classics, 48 players at once, nothing to install.

Two kids on an orange shag carpet in front of a wood-cabinet television playing an invaders game, a bowl of popcorn between them, a lamp glowing beside the TV
Somebody's living room, somebody's Saturday. 1983.

WHAT IT IS

JOINR ARENA is a set of online multiplayer arcade arenas that run in your web browser. Each one takes a game we loved in the arcades — a maze-muncher, a space shooter, a meteor-blaster, a planet defender, a digger, a dungeon crawler, a falling-block puzzler, a kart racer, a first-person alien hunt and a line-drawing land grab — and links dozens of copies of it together, so you play your own game while raiding, racing and messing with the players either side of you.

There's nothing to download and nothing to sign up for. Type a name, pick an arena, press READY. Bots fill every empty seat, so a round is never empty, and every round ends on a leaderboard.

WHY

It started with a group of friends who wanted something fast and loud to play together on their phones, with real controllers clipped on, while talking. So it's built around exactly that: phone and clip-on pad first, open-mic voice chat with one tap, rounds short enough for a quick game, and bots so a round is never empty.

The games we picked are the ones that were on that TV. We didn't want to remake them; we wanted to put everyone in the same room with them. Forty-eight people in a maze-muncher. A kart race where every driver's face is their own. A ship full of marines with the Hive in the vents.

Everything is drawn and played in neon, with the bass turned up. Headphones recommended.

"It should feel like the floor in front of the TV did: loud, fast, everybody shouting at once."THE BRIEF, DAY ONE
A worn games-magazine cover titled ARENA: four kids crowded round a tube television playing a ladder-climbing game, with the cover lines 48 PLAYERS AT ONCE!, CLIP IT TO YOUR PHONE over a phone in a clip-on controller, and THE HIVE IS ABOARD over a spaceship

▶ FROM THE BACK PAGES

The ads we tore out and kept.

If JOINR ARENA had been sold in the magazines we read under the covers, the cover would have been this one, and the ads would have looked a lot like these.

CIRCA 1977 A 1977 magazine advertisement: a family on a shag carpet in front of a wood-cabinet TV showing a bat-and-ball game, a wood-grain console with two paddle controllers, the headline BRING THE ARCADE HOME! and a FREE! starburst
CIRCA 1985 A 1985 poster-style advertisement: chrome lettering reading THE FUTURE IS IN YOUR POCKET over a tube TV floating on a neon grid showing a wireframe racing game, with hands holding a grey handheld console showing the same game

▶ THREE LIVING ROOMS

Same floor. Different TV.

A 1977 living room: a wood-cabinet television on a side table showing a bat-and-ball game, a wood-grain console with two paddle dials beside it, gold curtains, a green velvet armchair and a macramé plant hanger

1977

Two paddles, one dot, and the whole street in the lounge. Black and white, and it still felt like the future.

A 1985 living room from the floor: socked feet on a brown shag carpet, a grey console and two rectangular controllers in front of a wood-cabinet television showing a side-scrolling platform game, a plaid armchair and a lamp beside it

1985

A grey box, a blown-on cartridge and a plumber. Sixteen colours and a whole world. Saturday mornings disappeared.

A teenager sitting on an orange shag carpet in front of a switched-off modern television, playing a neon kart-racing game on a phone with a clip-on controller

2026

The TV is in your pocket, the controller clips on, the big one on the cabinet stays off, and the other forty-seven kids are wherever they are. Same floor.

A crowded arcade at night: teenagers in satin jackets leaning over a row of cabinets, the screens and marquees glowing, coloured lights and haze in the back of the hall

▶ THE OTHER ROOM

Somebody always had next.

"You put your quarter on the glass and waited. Now there's no queue: forty-eight machines, forty-eight players, one room, and the round starts when you press READY."WHY THE ROUNDS ARE SHORT

HOW IT'S MADE

Every arena runs on our own server, many times a second, and streams what's near you to your device. Your own ship, digger, kart or marine runs on your screen as well, so it reacts the instant you press, and the server keeps everyone honest.

The soundtracks are composed for each arena and synthesised right in your browser; the neon is drawn in real time; ALIEN ARENA's marines and monsters are tiny 3D models photographed from eight angles, the way the classics' sprites were. Nothing is bought in. If you can see it or hear it, somebody here made it.

ADVERTISING

JOINR ARENA is free and supported by ads from Google. We keep them out of the way: ads only show at natural breaks (after a round ends, or when you move between arenas) and the game's sound pauses while one plays. See the privacy policy for how ads use cookies.
